How Will the Game Expand After Its Release?

Gearbox Software and 2K (Take-Two) will expand the game once again after its release to keep players engaged longer.

Borderlands 4 won’t stop when the story wraps up. Instead, players can expect a deep endgame built around chasing the best loot Kairos has to offer. Progression will come through weekly challenge missions, unlockable specializations to further customize builds, and the return of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. This post-game difficulty option introduces five unlockable tiers of increasing challenge. Unlike earlier games in the series, players won’t need to replay the campaign to climb ranks. Instead, curated mission challenges will test their builds while growing tougher over time, eliminating the grind of farming the same gear again and again.

Each tier of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode introduces exclusive firmware that attaches bonuses to campaign gear. The more firmware collected, the greater the stat boosts. Firmware bonuses can be transferred once to another item, but doing so destroys the original gear and prevents further transfers. To keep players hooked on the loot chase, Gearbox has stacked the game with incentives. Weekly Wildcards rotate with guaranteed Legendary rewards. The Weekly Big Encore Boss event features a boss chosen by Moxxi, unlocked with Eridium and offering boosted drop rates. Maurice’s Black Market Machine sends players across Kairos in search of rare spoils, guaranteeing varied loot for everyone. All of these activities are matchmaking-enabled, encouraging players to squad up with friends or connect with new allies.

Post-launch, players can expect a robust roadmap packed with both free and premium DLC. Paid expansions will come in two forms: Story Packs and Bounty Packs. The first Story Pack introduces the indomitable fan-favorite Ellie in Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. With its cosmic horror theme and darker, bloodier tone, the pack brings a brand-new Kairos region to explore, fresh main and side quests, new Legendary loot, and the game’s first post-launch playable Vault Hunter. The pack also includes four Vault Hunter skins, two vehicle skins, three Echo-4 drone skins, attachments, and an Echo-4 frame.

The debut Bounty Pack brings narrative-driven missions that expand the Borderlands universe further, diving into the backstories of new characters like Rush, the charismatic leader of the Outbounders. Each Bounty Pack adds new main missions, a boss, Legendary gear, a player skin, an Echo-4 drone skin, a vehicle, and a Vault Card. The Vault Card unlocks 24 cosmetics and four rerollable gear pieces. Seasonal Mini-Events will also arrive as free content, beginning in October with Horrors of Kairos, delivering new Legendary weapons, cosmetics, and a weather variant. On top of that, Invincible Bosses will roll out after launch for all players at no cost. These high-level arena challenges incorporate new traversal mechanics, rewarding massive Legendary drops to those who prevail. Each new Invincible Boss release will also add another Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode tier.

Borderlands 4 launches September 12 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, followed by an October 3 release on Nintendo Switch 2.
