[CES2025] The tiny PCB of the RTX 5090!

As we saw on the ASUS and MSI stands, the custom RTX 50s are shaping up to be particularly imposing. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find cards occupying three slots or even more on other custom versions. Whatever the case, these custom designs stand in stark contrast to NVIDIA’s Founders Edition. What’s more, its PCB is ultra-small, it fits in the palm of your hand, as the PCGamesN photos show!

RTX 5090: a photo of its tiny PCB!

As you can see, the PCB is very, very compact. It measures just a few centimetres across and fits comfortably in your hand. On it we find the very large GB202, which constitutes the GPU of this RTX 5090, and all around it we have the GDDR7 memory chips, 32 GB of them, and that’s it. If you’re looking for the power supply stages, you’ll have to look all around and at the back of the PCB.

In fact, these photos tell us that the brand is opting for several modules, as was the case with the ‘ RTX 4090 Ti ‘ prototype. In fact, on the back of the PCB there are several connectors that need to be connected to the PCIe slot as well as to the card’s video outputs. In short, all this is just the culmination of an effort to make the card as compact as possible that the Greens have been making for some time now. The days of 28 cm long PCBs seem to be over.

Finally, we’d like to mention the card’s power supply, which takes the form of a 12V-2×6 connector mounted vertically in one of the corners of the PCB.

Les NVIDIA RTX 5000 annoncées au CES 2025Unfortunately, we haven’t yet had the chance to see photos of the card’s cooling system. However, as you can see from the exploded view shared during the conference, it looks very unusual. Firstly, the card occupies just two slots, in stark contrast to the RTX 4090, and secondly, the PCB is mounted in the centre with a 3D vapour chamber placed on top. Add two axial fans and fins underneath and you’re done.

On the other hand, this design means that you won’t be able to watercool your RTX 5090 FE!

EDIT: When I said “you won’t be able to watercool your RTX 5090 FE”, I was a bit hasty. However, designing such a block isn’t going to be easy, but the design promises to be interesting. To be continued. In any case, the first blocks to be announced concern the reference PCBs, which differ from that of the FE.
