LG Announce 45GX950A and 45GX990A 45″ OLED Displays with 5K2K Resolution

Originally published 30 Dec 2024, last updated 8 January 2025

Following the rumours we brought you recently, LG Electronics have today announced the release of two new OLED monitors in their range, including the World’s first 45″ models which will feature a higher resolution of 5120 x 2160. The new UltraGear GX9 series is set to be unveiled at CES 2025 this January and we will bring you more news next week from the event. The new lineup includes the 45″ 45GX950A and the 45″ 45GX990A – winner of three CES 2025 Innovation Awards, including the prestigious ‘Best of Innovation’. There’s also a new 39″ ultrawide model, the 39GX90SA with built in LG webOS smart monitor features which is covered below too.

To ensure maximum gaming immersion, all the UltraGear GX9 series models feature curved display panels employing LG’s advanced WOLED technology, or in the case of one of the 45″ models it will be bendable too (more below). These screens offer high brightness, true blacks, stunning colors and optimized curvature; a combination that brings games to life and draws users deeper into the exhilarating action of their favorite titles. Certified for low blue light emissions, the GX9 series provides a more comfortable experience, reducing eye strain during extended gaming sessions.

Anti-glare & low-reflection (AGLR) coating

In addition the LG.Display WOLED panels feature LG’s Anti-Glare & Low Reflection (AGLR) coating which “minimizes screen reflections and glare, making it easier for gamers to see everything that’s happening on screen, even in brighter rooms.” We don’t expect this to be any different from their existing matte AG coating used on other WOLED panels but we will check this out when we see the screens in person.

45″ Ultrawide LG 45GX950A and LG 45GX990A offer 5K2K resolution for the first time

The 45GX990A and 45GX950A are 45″ in size (more accurately 44.5″) with an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio and featuring ultra-high 5K2K resolution (5,120 x 2,160) – a first for OLED monitors. This will offer a pixel density of 125 PPI, a big step up from the currently available 3440 x 1440 resolution 45″ models which only offer 83 PPI. This pixel density sits in between the 27″ 1440p models (109 PPI) and the 32″ 4K models (140 PPI).

This increased resolution will offer a much larger desktop real-estate, being able to natively support 4K content as well (3840 x 2160) with borders down the side if needed for external devices like games consoles. It will also offer a sharper and clearer picture than current 45″ OLED monitors, making them more suitable to desktop applications as well as games and multimedia.

Their 21:9 aspect ratio offers a more immersive gaming experience than standard 16:9 displays, while maintaining better content compatibility than 32:9 monitors. With generous screen real estate, these monitors are a great choice not only for gaming but for various different uses.

A Curved and a Bendable option will be available

The 950A model has a steep 800R curvature, the same as we’ve seen from LG.Display’s other 34″, 39″ and 45″ WOLED panels to date. The 990A model however will offer a bendable format which “can smoothly transition from completely flat to a 900R curvature within seconds, offering users incredible flexibility and more control over their gaming experience”. That’s slightly less curved than the 950A model at it’s maximum curve adjustment.

We expect this model to be more expensive but more versatile, and we really liked the bendable format of Corsair’s Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240 45″ OLED when we tested that. Update: we have confirmed that the bendable function will be accessed via a remote control and so this looks like it will be an automatic, motorized adjustment like their LG’s 42″ Flex OLED screen offered.

Dual-mode support

The LG press release says that “both products feature LG’s second-generation Dual-Mode, offering customizable aspect ratios (21:9 or 16:9) and picture sizes (39-, 34- or 27-inches) with one-touch switching between preset screen-resolution and refresh-rate combos. With eight configurations, users can personalize their gaming setups to suit their preferences or adapt to different game genres, including FPS, RPG, MOBA and racing simulators.”

While not included in the official press release, we have now confirmed with LG that these new 45″ screens will offer a native 165Hz refresh rate at 5120 x 2160, with the ability then to double the refresh rate to 330Hz if you lower the resolution by half to 2560 x 1080. It’s not clear at this stage what combinations will be available if you want to run in 16:9 aspect ratio. We knew there were panels of this spec in plan from LG.Display with a 165Hz refresh rate. It’s likely that 240Hz refresh rate panels will follow at a later date, which were also on the roadmap.

Other specs

  • Both the new 45″ OLED screens offer the usual 0.03ms G2G response time spec. They offer adaptive-sync for VRR from compatible systems, with certification under the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ schemes. HDMI 2.1 VRR is also listed as a feature in the spec. They also conform to the VESA ClearMR 13000 tier for motion clarity.
  • While not listed on the specs we’ve been provided or in the press release the panel should offer a 1300 nits peak brightness spec for HDR like the other recent LG.Display WOLED panels. This may be a little lower if LG Electronics decide to be a little more conservative with the spec. The screens are certified under the VESA ‘DisplayHDR 400 True Black’ tier.
  • The updated RGWB subpixel layout that we’ve already seen on some other recent LG.Display WOLED panels (e.g. 32″ 4K dual-mode, and 27″ 480Hz 1440p) means the monitor improves the readability of in-game text and makes productivity tasks, such as editing documents or website content, that much easier.
  • Both models have a wide colour gamut which covers 98.5% of the DCI-P3 gamut. The screens also come factory calibrated and support hardware level calibration via ‘LG Calibration Studio’ as per their previous OLED monitors. This hardware level calibration remains unique to LG at the moment in the consumer OLED monitor market.
  • Both screens have a 4-side borderless design
  • The 950A model includes 2x 10W integrated speakers with ‘Rich Bass’ along with a DTS Virtual:X, 4-pol headphone out connection with DTS HP:X. The 990A model (bendable) has the same headphone connection but lacks the integrated speakers.
  • The stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments and both models list wall mounting options with VESA 100 x 100mm.
  • PiP and PbP modes are supported for handling multiple video inputs (see below).
  • Familiar Hexagon RGB lighting is featured on the back of the screen.

Connectivity options (updated)

The 950A model features 1x DisplayPort 2.1, 2x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode, data and 90W power delivery) connections. The 990A model has the same connections although the USB-C port is listed as TBD at the moment.

The tier for the DisplayPort 2.1 connection was not listed in the original press release but we have since confirmed with LG that these new screens will feature UHBR13.5. This is the same tier featured on their 27″ 480Hz model, actually not sufficient to power this spec with an uncompressed video signal unfortunately. Considering the demands of the spec this screen would require ~60.18 Gbps bandwidth to power 5120 x 2160 @ 165Hz 10-bit which means that it would need UHBR20 speeds to deliver an uncompressed, DSC-free experience. UHBR13.5 as featured here only has support for a data rate up to 52.22 Gbps.

We assume that, like on the 27″ 480Hz model, this has been done due to constraints with scaler support, development costs and complexity – given consumer graphics cards (from AMD) are currently only available up to UHBR13.5. NVIDIA announced UHBR20 support for their latest RTX 50 series cards though.

LG Announce UltraGear 39GX90SA Smart Monitor with 39″ OLED Panel and LG webOS

Not a massive amount of information is provided in the official press release at this stage but we expect more details to be unveiled at CES 2025 next week. We’ve managed to get some further info and specs from LG in the meantime though.

In addition to the 45″ models above, the brand-new LG UltraGear 39GX90SA is “designed to deliver stellar gaming and content-streaming experiences”. It’s powered by webOS allowing it to function as a home entertainment hub, enabling users to access all their go-to streaming services without a PC or set-top box.

The new screen is 39″ in size with an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio and a steep curved format of 800R. The image above is of the 39GX90SA-W, so it might be that this screen is available in black and white colours.

LG 39GX90SA Specs and features

We have confirmed that this screen will offer the standard 3440 x 1440 resolution of current 39″ ultrawide WOLED models offering a 96 PPI pixel density. It also offers a 240Hz refresh rate, VRR support and a 0.03ms G2G response time. The screen will be certified under the AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’, NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and VESA ‘ClearMR 13000’ schemes. It has a wide colour gamut covering 98.5% DCI-P3 and comes factory calibrated. Hardware calibration support is not listed for this model at the moment. This model is certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black tier again, and we expect a peak brightness spec of 1300 nits.

Connectivity options and extra features

It offers 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.1 and 1x USB type-C (with DP Alt mode, data and 65W power delivery) connections as well as 2x USB data ports. PiP and PbP modes are supported for handling multiple inputs. The screen also features 2x 7W integrated speakers along with a 3-pole headphone out connections and a built-in mic. The stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments or this can be removed in favour of VESA 100 x 100mm mounting if you’d rather.

“The UltraGear GX9 series sets a new standard for OLED gaming monitors, combining groundbreaking display technology with smart features that expand and enhance the user experience,” said YS Lee, vice president and head of the IT Business Unit, LG Media Entertainment Solution Company. “From the world’s first 5K2K OLED gaming monitors with second-generation Dual-Mode to smart gaming monitors with built-in webOS, the GX9 lineup pushes the boundaries to deliver maximum value and enjoyment for our customers.”

More information, release date and pricing

Please note that the specs provided here may be subject to final changes although we expect these to be pretty much there.

The 45GX950A is listed for mass production in Q1 2025 and has a current RRP of $1,999 USD. We were told at CES that it should be released in April 2025. The bendable 45GX990A mass production and pricing is still to be determined. The 39″ 39GX90SA is listed for Q3 2025 mass production at the moment with an RRP of $1,599 USD.
