Gigabyte Z890 and X870 Aorus Tachyon Ice under LN2

Some time ago, we reported on the appearance of Tachyon Ice X870 and Z890 motherboards in European shops. Today, we have the first results on these two models posted on HWbot.

Gigabyte Z890 Tachyon Ice

After a first appearance at Computex 2024, the Z890 Aorus Tachyon was announced with official visuals. Hicookie, Gigabyte’s in-house overclocker behind the tachyon series, published its first tests at the end of 2024 at max memory frequency of over 12200 Mt/s, followed by a benchmark on Cinebench R23 with memory at 10000 Mt/s in Gear 4.

LAN XOC On the island of Tasmania in Australia

Now it’s the turn of the AMD X870 version to make its appearance at a private LAN in Australia with Hicookie and some Australian overclockers close to the brand. We’ve seen the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Tachyon Ice on FatBoyNotSoSlim ‘s HWbot posts and the Z890 version on AG-TAS‘s posts.

Let’s start with the Gigabyte X870 tachyon Ice, which has an all-white PCB and, as with the Z890 presented at Computex, 90° dimm slots. The angle of the photo gives a perfect view of the OC area, here we have BCLK/ratio buttons, a Power, Clear Cmos, Retry and Reset button. No safe ‘turtle mode ‘ visible here. Further on, we see 2 Qcodes and the 24-pin power connector. As you can see, the OC area is less extensive than the Tachyon under LGA 1700 or on the Z890 Tachyon, although the PCB is the same size with an e-ATX format.

Let’s move on to the results obtained on this X870 tachyon Ice by FatBoyNotSoSlim. For the moment, the platform seems fairly young and the memory profile used is close to XMP with 8000CL38. The T27 Bios used indicates the use of an engineering version that is not yet perfected. We hope that the board will be finalised quickly enough to be able to compete in the upcoming Gskill OC World Cup.

We continue with the Gigabyte Z890 Aorus Tachyon Ice, which has been in the hands of AG-TAS. Here, it’s difficult to learn more about the motherboard, which is not in the foreground of the photo. We can see it at the bottom of the image, topped by a Kingpin Cooling bucket.

In terms of results, once again we have a fairly low memory profile with only 7400CL32. The Bios used is a y6p version, a bios that is also not available to the public as we generally have X Bios for XOC Bios on Tachyon. However, the card seems to be closer to release than the X870 version.

Gigabyte appears to be on the home straight for its next-generation XOC motherboards, despite being glaringly behind the competition, which has already laid the foundations for the new LGA1851 and Arrow Lake socket. However, there is still an opportunity to release the AMD X870 Tachyon Ice version at the same time as the Crosshair X870E APEX, expected soon from Asus.
