TP-Link routers are facing a potential US ban over cybersecurity risks! Here is what you need to know about this developing story…
TP-Link routers face US ban over cybersecurity risks!
According to The Wall Street Journal, the United States is mulling a potential ban of TP-Link routers due to significant cybersecurity risks. The ongoing probe, led by the US Commerce, Defense, and Justice Departments, could result in major consequences for the Shenzhen-based company.
This investigation comes amidst rising concerns over the security vulnerabilities of TP-Link’s routers, which are used by millions of Americans. The three US government departments are reportedly concerned that TP Link does not address security flaws, and ships routers without fixing potential exploits.
In response to these concerns, a TP-Link spokesperson told WSJ, “We welcome any opportunities to engage with the US government to demonstrate that our security practices are fully in line with industry security standards and to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the US market, US consumers, and addressing US national security risks.”
However, some U.S. lawmakers have already expressed skepticism about TP-Link’s commitment to securing its routers. In August 2024, the US House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the US and China sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, urging further investigation into the security risks posed by TP-Link routers. The letter highlighted concerns that TP-Link devices could be exploited by hackers affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

US believes TP-Link routers pose cybersecurity risks
One of the key reasons behind the investigation is the growing concern over cyber espionage and data harvesting. U.S. lawmakers have expressed fears that Chinese-backed hackers could use TP-Link routers as tools to infiltrate American telecom infrastructure. The letter from the Select Committee pointed to past incidents where Chinese cyber military forces allegedly used TP-Link routers in hacking campaigns targeting European government officials.
The investigation into TP-Link comes amid broader efforts by the U.S. government to combat Chinese cyber threats. Officials are particularly concerned that the widespread use of TP-Link routers in American homes and businesses could give hackers a foothold in critical infrastructure. If these devices are compromised, they could potentially serve as entry points for cyber attacks on government systems, businesses, and personal data.
This is not the first time TP-Link has faced scrutiny over its security practices. Other countries have raised concerns as well. In the past, India issued security warnings about TP-Link routers, and Taiwan placed a limited ban on their use. These international actions have only heightened the pressure on TP-Link to improve its security measures.
In response to the growing concerns, TP-Link has attempted to distance itself from its Chinese operations. Earlier this year, TP-Link announced the establishment of a U.S.-based subsidiary, TP-Link Systems Inc., in an effort to reassure American consumers and government officials about its commitment to security.

China denies US allegations of cyberattacks
In addition to the investigation, the Chinese government has vehemently denied any involvement in cyber espionage activities related to TP-Link. Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., has argued that the U.S. is using security concerns as a pretext to suppress Chinese companies. “We urge the U.S. to stop broadening the concept of national security and cease the abuse of national power to suppress Chinese companies,” Liu stated in an email.
Despite these denials, US officials remain concerned about the role of Chinese-backed hackers in various cyber espionage campaigns. These concerns have been exacerbated by the recent Salt Typhoon cyber espionage campaign, which targeted senior US political figures, including President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.
The investigation into TP-Link routers is part of a larger effort by the U.S. government to address growing cybersecurity concerns related to Chinese telecommunications equipment. In recent months, the U.S. Commerce Department has launched several probes into Chinese companies, including China Telecom, over potential national security risks. These investigations are part of a broader strategy to limit China’s access to American telecommunications infrastructure, particularly amid rising fears of state-sponsored cyberattacks.
The recent hacking of US telecommunication networks, which targeted top political officials, has raised the stakes in this ongoing cyber conflict. US intelligence agencies have linked these attacks to Chinese hacker groups, including APT10 and APT41, which have a long history of targeting critical infrastructure worldwide. Although there is no direct evidence linking TP-Link routers to these specific hacks, the investigation has cast a shadow over the company’s operations.

Impact of potential US ban on TP-Link
If the United States decides to ban TP-Link routers, the company could face significant financial and reputational damage. TP-Link has become one of the leading providers of affordable routers in the US, and any ban would disrupt its business in a critical market. However, the company has stated that it is committed to engaging with the US government to address any concerns and demonstrate that its products comply with US security standards.
Despite the ongoing investigation, there is no indication that TP-Link will face immediate sanctions or a ban. Still, the uncertainty surrounding the situation has left many consumers and businesses questioning whether TP-Link routers are safe to use.
As the investigation continues, TP-Link will likely face increasing pressure to prove its commitment to cybersecurity and its ability to address the concerns raised by US officials. How the company responds will play a critical role in its future success in the US market.
